WHAT EXACTLY IS A CREEPYPASTA, AND WHERE DID THEY COME FROM?

Creepypasta are essentially internet horror stories, passed around on forums and other sites to disturb and frighten readers. The name “creepypasta” originally comes from the word “copypasta”, an internet slang term for a block of text that gets copied and pasted over and over again from website to website. Creepypastas are sometimes supplemented with pictures, audio and/or video footage related to the story, typically with gory, distorted, or otherwise shocking content.

While creepypasta today varies greatly in length and quality, and has become virtually synonymous with short horror fiction written by generally unpublished authors, older ones tend to be very short and follow a set of common formulas, ranging from anecdotal retellings to descriptions of rites and rituals (“ritualpastas”) and “Lost Episodes”.

CreepypastaStories.com  launched in 2020. However, “creepypastas” themselves have been around since 2008, when the original “creepypasta” meme was still new, and thus “classic” creepypastas were pulled from actual, ongoing threads on places like /x/ and Encyclopedia Dramatica. So when you see the 2008-2009 pastas that may seem really basic and/or sparse now, please keep in mind that these were the pastas that actually helped launch the genre entirely. Creepypasta was extremely ritualpasta-heavy and stories tended to be short and vague, rather than the more fully realized short stories that has become the norm today.

ARE YOU MR. CREEPYPASTA, VICTOR SURGE, OR ANY OTHER OF THE WELL-KNOWN CREEPYPASTA CREATORS OR NARRATORS?

No, and though we’ve had contact with many of these individuals, we are not directly associated with them, and cannot guarantee that we can put you in contact with them.  If you’d like to make content with individual creepypasta narrators or the authors/creators of specific stories, please reach out to them via their own YouTube channels, websites / blogs, or social media profiles.

HOW DO I GO ABOUT GETTING PERMISSION TO ADAPT THE STORIES FEATURED ON THE SITE TO AUDIO, FILM OR TELEVISION, OR FOR USE ON MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL, WEBSITE, PODCAST OR OTHER PERSONAL OR COMMERCIAL PROJECTS?

In order to obtain permission to feature a story on your YouTube channel, podcast, or stream, or to feature it in an anthology or other printed work, or to adapt it to a comic, film, television show, graphic novel, or any other medium, you MUST get in contact with the cited author of the work directly to negotiate it with them individually.  There is no one “owner” or “creator” of creepypasta as it exists as a meme, genre, or term itself, and no one person can authorize requests to exploit the individual stories which exist within the communities that have formed around it.

If an author’s contact information is available, it will be featured at the conclusion of each story as part of their credit by-line. If the author is not identified, or is listed as anonymous, this does not mean the story is in the public domain and not subject to copyright law, or that you can freely exploit it for personal gain.  If you decide to adapt or feature stories from this website without the express written consent of their creators, you do so at your own peril.  CreepypastaStories.com takes no responsibility for damages you may incur as a result of violating the intellectual property rights of others.
